SANDRA DARBY - Nye County Commissioner District 4
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family own a dog, cat, ferret, etc.?
Yes, I own several animals including cats, dogs, geese, ducks, etc.
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family hunt, with or without a dog?
We used to hunt yearly when we lived up in Washington State and we trained our
Chesapeake Bay Retrievers to retrieve; however, never had the opportunity to use them
in duck hunting as we moved down here.
* Do you support any animal rescue organizations or shelters?
I have no problem with animal shelters that take in animals that are abandoned due to
people moving or dying. I don't know much about animal rescues. Any information you can
send me on this would be appreciated.
* Do you philosophically support any animal rights or animal protection organizations? If
so,please identify the organizations.
My husband lost his job in the Northwest due to the "spotted owl" situation because
supposedly they only lived in old growth, when they were living in people's barns. I don't
trust animal rights organizations to be honest. I also believe that humans should come
first. No, I do not philosophically support any animal rights or protection organizations.
* Do any animal rights or animal protection organizations endorse you as a candidate or
financially support your campaign?
No, nor would I accept their donations.
* Should Spaying or Neutering of an animal be controlled by the government through
legislation or should it be left between a veterinarian and their client to decide?
Spaying and neutering should be left up to the decision of the OWNER of the animal, who
would then choose to discuss it with the veternarian. Under no circumstances should the
government tell you what to do with your animal on your property.
* Do you believe that animal owners should have their status as owners changed to the
status of guardians? As a guardian you do not own your animals, you are strictly a
caretaker?
No, animals do not have the same rights as people. We should remain as their owners.
* Do you support the states' prerogatives to manage their resident wildlife populations
and establish local hunting regulations, without federal interference?
Amendment X: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor
Prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
* Do you believe in peoples rights to own (responsibly) any animal of their choice,
regardless of species: exotic or domestic?
Yes, there is nothing in the Constitution to deny this. As per the Nye County Libertarian
Bylaws: As Libertarians we believe that people should be allowed to live as they choose
so long as they allow others to do the same.
* Do you believe it is okay to discriminate against exotic animal owners through unfair
bans?
No. People need to let other people live as they see fit and not infringe on their personal
liberties. It is sad that some people think that they have a right to tell you how to live on
your own property.
What is your position on the following animal and/or hunting related issues?
a) Hunting, including the use of dogs
I hunt and would use dogs.
b) Fishing
I love to fish.
c) Animal medical research
I thought long and hard about this one. I could see the pros and cons, but realized I
would have to be a vegan to be totally against it. There is nothing unconstitutional about
it.
d) Animal ownership and breeding (including pet & livestock breeding, research animals,
circuses and rodeos)
I believe that there is nothing unconstitutional about this. That animal breeding, etc. is
up to the owners, a personal right, as long as it does not infringe on the neighbors. If I
thought that my neighbor was being cruel to an animal, I should approach him and
discuss it on a 1:1 basis. Because perhaps I do not know the whole story and I would
hope he would approach me rather than call in the authorities if he questioned how I was
treating my animals or livestock.
I would have to end with part of the preamble to the Libertarian bylaws: As Libertarians
we believe that people should be allowed to live as they choose so long as they allow
others to do the same.
