RANDI THOMPSON - Nevada State Assembly 14
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family own a dog, cat, ferret, etc.?
Yes, I have a dog, a cocker spaniel. It's my 3rd cocker. I've also had a Jack Russell terrier
(or terror!) I've had dogs for over 25 years... beats having a husband.
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family hunt, with or without a dog?
No, we're skiers and golfers... I wasn't raised to be that adventurous...
* Do you support any animal rescue organizations or shelters?
I have been a consultant in the past to the Nevada Humane Society helping them with
fundraising.
* Do you philosophically support any animal rights or animal protection organizations? If
so,please identify the organizations.
I'm "ok" with most of what our local Nevada Humane society supports, but not all. I like
their efforts for a "no kill" and push adoption and spay and neutering. They advocate
more owner responsibility. I am opposed to most of what PETA, the national SPCA and the
national Humane Society do. PETA has one of the highest kill rates of any "animal rights"
group. They hardly live up to the name. (I also have a fur coat!)
* Do any animal rights or animal protection organizations endorse you as a candidate or
financially support your campaign?
No.
* Should Spaying or Neutering of an animal be controlled by the government through
legislation or should it be left between a veterinarian and their client to decide?
I don't support legislative approaches. These issues are best left to an pet owner,
especially when that owner is a breeder of AKC pets, hunting dogs, competitive dogs, etc.
* Do you believe that animal owners should have their status as owners changed to the
status of guardians? As a guardian you do not own your animals, you are strictly a
caretaker?
I often feel like my dog "owns" me! I'm not familiar with the terminology or how that
impacts the relationship, but from the definition, caretaker seems like some "PC" term,
and I'm not real PC. I strive to be a responsible dog "person" by providing him healthy
food (I actually make my dog's food), get him to the vet when needed, get him exercise,
and keep him safe. I don't know if that is an "owner" or a "caretaker" as much as it is
being responsible. I welcome your input on this issue.
* Do you support the states' prerogatives to manage their resident wildlife populations
and establish local hunting regulations, without federal interference?
Yes
* Do you believe in peoples rights to own (responsibly) any animal of their choice,
regardless of species: exotic or domestic?
Yes
* Do you believe it is okay to discriminate against exotic animal owners through unfair
bans?
Not sure what this means relates to, but my gut says no.
