NANCY ALLF - Clark County District Court #27
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family own a dog, cat, ferret, etc.?
My husband and I have 2 cats that we adopted through an animal shelter Dewey and
Truman. Almost every member of our extended family has pets, mostly cats. We love our
pets and our friends' pets.
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family hunt, with or without a dog?
We aren't hunters, but members of our family are avid hunters. I personally am a member
of the NRA, however. Most of our family members who hunt, own hunting dogs. In my
experience, hunters are nature lovers and conservation-minded.
* Do you support any animal rescue organizations or shelters?
We got our pets through an animal shelter because we felt it was a responsible way to
adopt our pets; the 19 year old cat we replaced had also been adopted, but from friends
who had found an abandoned litter while hiking. We do support animal rescue
organizations, because it's how we get our pets. When our 19 year old cat died, some
friends made a donation in her memory to Best Friends animal sanctuary.
* Do you philosophically support any animal rights or animal protection organizations? If
so,please identify the organizations.
This is an area that I have not been involved in, either as a donor or supporter. It isn't
that I don't love animals, it just isn't an area of interest for me.
* Do any animal rights or animal protection organizations endorse you as a candidate or
financially support your campaign?
I have not sought out such endorsements or contributions.
* Should Spaying or Neutering of an animal be controlled by the government through
legislation or should it be left between a veterinarian and their client to decide?
I do think that responsible pet owners should spay and neuter their animals if they don't
intend to breed them, but generally disfavor legislation requiring it. However, I am
running for judge, not the legislature, and it is the job of judges to enforce existing laws,
not to legislate from the bench.
* Do you believe that animal owners should have their status as owners changed to the
status of guardians? As a guardian you do not own your animals, you are strictly a
caretaker?
This is something I have never considered, sorry. I do think pet owners must assume
responsibility for their pets, however.
* Do you support the states' prerogatives to manage their resident wildlife populations
and establish local hunting regulations, without federal interference?
It makes sense that states should make these decisions However,>please keep in mind
that as a Judge, I would be enforcing law, not making law.
* Do you believe in peoples rights to own (responsibly) any animal of their choice,
regardless of species: exotic or domestic?
I do think there are public safety issues involved in ownership of wild animals. For
example, it doesn't make sense in an urban setting for a homeowner to own large,
possible dangerous, exotic pets. On the other hand, people should be able to choose
what pet is right for them and their family.
* Do you believe it is okay to discriminate against exotic animal owners through unfair
bans?
It is never okay to discriminate- the equal protection clause of the US Constitution says
that every person comes before the law equally. To the extent the fairness of laws comes
before the court system, it is the job of judges to enforce the constitution and laws, even
if they personally disagree with the law as written.
What is your position on the following animal and/or hunting related issues?
a) Hunting, including the use
Even though I personally do not hunt, my dad was an avid fisherman, and it was a sport he
loved. I am supportive of people's right to enjoy the sports they choose. I am also
supportive of people's right to use dogs hunting. My husband and I enjoy horse racing,
for example, which some people criticize as unfair to horses. But we love the thrill of the
competition. And we know how well cared for, the horses are.
b) Fishing
Same answer
c) Animal medical research
Animal medical researchthis isn't an issue I've spent much time considering. Sometimes I
see labels on products I buy that say no animal research was done in making the
products, but I don't buy based upon that label.
d) Animal ownership and breeding (including pet & livestock breeding, research animals,
circuses and rodeos)
I grew up on a working cattle farm in Kentucky where we bred the cattle. I love going to
the rodeo! As a child, I loved the circus. I will always have a pet in my home, so long as I
can care for it.
