Candidate running for: Assembly District 21
MARK SHERWOOD - Nevada State Assembly 21
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family own a dog, cat, ferret, etc.?

Up until two months ago I owned a Puggle named Cinnamon. Growing up >our family
always had a family dog and later on a cat and a dog.

* Do you or anyone in your immediate family hunt, with or without a dog?

I am a member of the NRA, but I do not hunt. My pastime of choice is golf (although I don't
get to that very often either).

* Do you support any animal rescue organizations or shelters?

I think the work done by animal rescue organizations and shelters is very important.

* Do you philosophically support any animal rights or animal protection organizations? If
so,please identify the organizations.

If you are talking about PETA, I think they are extreme in methods. I am unaware of any
other 'animal protection organizations'.

* Do any animal rights or animal protection organizations endorse you as a candidate or
financially support your campaign?

N/A

* Should Spaying or Neutering of an animal be controlled by the government through
legislation or should it be left between a veterinarian and their client to decide?

In as much as the public policy in Southern Nevada appears to be settling around the
default position of mandatory spay/neuter at a certain age of the animal (as you know Las
Vegas recently adopted this position), I would favor an option for responsible pet owners
to easily wave this government controlled mandate.

* Do you believe that animal owners should have their status as owners changed to the
status of guardians? As a guardian you do not own your animals, you are strictly a
caretaker?

What? My horse sense says that changing owner to 'guardian' or 'caretaker' is driven by
extremists with an agenda. Pets are called pets for a reason. You either own a pet or you
don't.

* Do you support the states' prerogatives to manage their resident wildlife populations
and establish local hunting regulations, without federal interference?

I generally favor States' rights without federal interference.

* Do you believe in peoples rights to own (responsibly) any animal of their choice,
regardless of species: exotic or domestic?

My own experience has shown me that 'exotic' animals are not meant to be owned in the
same way as domesticated animals. I believe there needs to be some safeguards in place
with respect to owning 'exotic' animals.

* Do you believe it is okay to discriminate against exotic animal owners through unfair
bans?

I would be interested to discuss the question in further detail. As an example, I would not
want my neighbor to own a tiger and I would expect that "local bans" would protect me
from my neighbor owning a tiger. On the other hand, if my neighbor owned an electric eel
that would be fine with me.So I guess I am beginning to sound like a politician on that
question. My guiding principles is typically, less regulation and 'unfair bans' certainly is
not something I favor. At the same time we need to protect the rights of others who would
be adversely affected by such ownership. What the famous quote attributed to Supreme
Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Your rights end where my nose begins.

What is your position on the following animal and/or hunting related issues?

a) Hunting, including the use

Hunting and Hunters rights should be preserved, including the use of dogs.

b) Fishing

Fishing rights should be preserved.

c) Animal medical research

Responsible animal research should be preserved.

d) Animal ownership and breeding (including pet & livestock breeding, research animals,
circuses and rodeos)

Animal ownership and breeding should be preserved. I love the rodeo. I regularly attend
PFR and NFR.
