MARK LUMPKIN - Sheriff Of Lyon County
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family own a dog, cat, ferret, etc.?
My wife and I, own three dogs; two golden retrievers and one German Sheppard/ Lab Mix.
All are registered with the county, have all immunizations, and have plenty of room out in
Smith Valley. We take them with us to Lowes, Lake Tahoe, and on all hiking and camping
expeditions. They are an integral part of our family.
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family hunt, with or without a dog?
I have not hunted in more than 30 years...but I have hunted with a camera...and love the
animals in the wild. I would hunt for food, not for sport, but support hunting, as it has it's
place when the games gets too plentiful.
* Do you support any animal rescue organizations or shelters?
Yes we do...the rescue home for the Golden Retrievers and other breeds.
* Do you philosophically support any animal rights or animal protection organizations? If
so,please identify the organizations.
Yes, the Human Society, and the Animal Rescue Centers....avidly.
* Do any animal rights or animal protection organizations endorse you as a candidate or
financially support your campaign?
Not as of yet....though I would certainly welcome it.
* Should Spaying or Neutering of an animal be controlled by the government through
legislation or should it be left between a veterinarian and their client to decide?
I believe the Vet and the client to decide, but there are people out there that do not know
how to take care of their animals, and over breeding /uncontrolled breeding, is
dangerous to the species, especially when people do not take care of them....so there
needs to be some degree of enforcement
* Do you believe that animal owners should have their status as owners changed to the
status of guardians? As a guardian you do not own your animals, you are strictly a
caretaker?
This one is not an issue with me...my pets are part of our family....I will leave it at that.
* Do you support the states' prerogatives to manage their resident wildlife populations
and establish local hunting regulations, without federal interference?
Without a doubt...already too much federal government, that have too many bureaucrats
that have NO IDEA what they are legislating...I can go on with this topic.
* Do you believe in peoples rights to own (responsibly) any animal of their choice,
regardless of species: exotic or domestic?
Responsibly is the key word....some species are not domesticated, and should never
be...there is more information on this...and care and responsible are the main concerns...
* Do you believe it is okay to discriminate against exotic animal owners through unfair
bans?
See Above....no, should not be discriminated against...but has to be regulated to a
degree...once again, some animals are not deemed to be domesticated, and that animals
(depending on what they are), should not be kept in a "neighborhood"...too broad of a
question. CCR's will and country ordnances will play a larger role here.
What is your position on the following animal and/or hunting related issues?
a) Hunting, including the use of dogs
Supported...many breeds were bred for that...do not deprive them.
b) Fishing
Fully supported...every boy and girl should go fishing with their grandma and
grandpa...many lessons of life are taught in a boat or alongside of a river...
c) Animal medical research
As a former Special Forces Soldier...animal research has saved many, many of our
soldiers lives...I support it...once again...the key word is "responsibly".
d) Animal ownership and breeding (including pet & livestock breeding, research animals,
circuses and rodeos)
Yes, supportive...but once again...the key word, is RESPONSIBLY.
