JOHN J. Cahill - Clark County Public Administrator
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family own a dog, cat, ferret, etc.?
Two dogs
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family hunt, with or without a dog?
Not in Nevada, but my family in California and Arkansas hunt with dogs and my father did
when we were in Missouri.
* Do you support any animal rescue organizations or shelters?
Not directly but shelters serve a needed purpose in urban Clark County.
* Do you philosophically support any animal rights or animal protection organizations? If
so,please identify the organizations.
I do support the proper treatment of animals but that has nothing to do with hunting or
using animals to work in hunting, outfitting, packing in the outdoors.
* Do any animal rights or animal protection organizations endorse you as a candidate or
financially support your campaign?
No.
* Should Spaying or Neutering of an animal be controlled by the government through
legislation or should it be left between a veterinarian and their client to decide?
Spaying or Neutering as a part of an adoption program in urban areas is OK with me. The
families that adopt pay the cost, not the taxpayer. I think if a purebred dog were in the
shelter and the family adopting can show they are able to use the animal responsibly as a
breeder then an exception should be made but most breeders want papers so that may
never actually happen. But other than the adoption example pet owners can make the
spaying or neutering decisions and we don't need government involved.
* Do you believe that animal owners should have their status as owners changed to the
status of guardians? As a guardian you do not own your animals, you are strictly a
caretaker?
As a guardian you do not own your animals, you are strictly a caretaker? NO, that's silly
and insulting to the role of guardian that many families have raising children.
* Do you support the states' prerogatives to manage their resident wildlife populations
and establish local hunting regulations, without federal interference?
YES and I was a part of Senator Reid's successful efforts to correct that issue with S 339 -
see the info at http://www.NODC.us - I am Chair of the Nevada Outdoor Democrats -
everything that uses but never abuses the great Nevada outdoors. I was with the Senator
at the Fraternity of the Desert Bighorn when he learned about the issue and I explained
to staff that because it was a Federal Court ruling under the federal Commerce Clause it
had to have a federal fix in Congress. We could not fix it here locally. Reid fixed it and
saved Nevada's big game from being taken by wealthy non-resident hunters who could
have packed in and stayed a whole season to get a trophy animal.
* Do you believe in peoples rights to own (responsibly) any animal of their choice,
regardless of species: exotic or domestic?
Yes, as long as their actions don't harm or threaten another person and as long as they
don't take and endangered species away from it's natural environment.
* Do you believe it is okay to discriminate against exotic animal owners through unfair
bans?
Not enough info to answer this one completely. It would be wrong to allow say Mountain
Gorilla young to be imported to the US for personal possession when they are
endangered and the only way to get a baby is to kill the mother. Also nobody outside of a
zoo would have the skill and facility to care for such an animal. Careless importation of
large constrictors now threatens the natural fauna of the everglades in Florida. Hunting
them will help but it's not going to fix things. I would not want our American Alligators to
be threatened by the presence of a non-native predator and the snakes are taking large
numbers of young and adolescent Alligators now.
What is your position on the following animal and/or hunting related issues?
a) Hunting, including the use
Hunting, including the use of dogs - everybody should get to do it sometime. Dogs love
the work.
b) Fishing
Yes for sport fishing but our oceans are being plundered by commercial fishing. I don't
support whaling or killing of dolphins for any reason.
c) Animal medical research
Don't know much but don't have a problem in general.
d) Animal ownership and breeding (including pet & livestock breeding, research animals,
circuses and rodeos)
Animal ownership and breeding (including pet & livestock breeding, research animals,
circuses and rodeos) All OK except some of the small circuses don't do what's right - but
then they get stomped by their elephants sometimes too. What goes around comes
around ...
