JOEL F. HANSEN - Attorney General
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family own a dog, cat, ferret, etc.?
Yes, and we always have had a dog and often a cat. My brother also owned horses for
years.
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family hunt, with or without a dog?
Yes, many of us hunt.
* Do you support any animal rescue organizations or shelters?
No.
* Do you philosophically support any animal rights or animal protection organizations? If
so,please identify the organizations.
No.
* Do any animal rights or animal protection organizations endorse you as a candidate or
financially support your campaign?
No.
* Should Spaying or Neutering of an animal be controlled by the government through
legislation or should it be left between a veterinarian and their client to decide?
Let's keep the government out of our decisions as to our animals. It should be left to the
individual.
* Do you believe that animal owners should have their status as owners changed to the
status of guardians? As a guardian you do not own your animals, you are strictly a
caretaker?
NO TO GUARDIANSHIP
I don't know who is proposing such a ridiculous thing, but it is obviously for the purpose
of the state taking control and dictating to an animal owner how to take care of the animal
and imposing various regulations. It is just more "nanny state" thinking and intrusion on
our individual rights, more government agencies to run it, more bureaucrats to be paid
out of our tax money, more do-gooders wanting to take our money and then use it to
control us.
* Do you support the states' prerogatives to manage their resident wildlife populations
and establish local hunting regulations, without federal interference?
ABSOLUTELY. FEDERAL CONTROL IS DESTROYING OUR FREEDOM.
* Do you believe in peoples rights to own (responsibly) any animal of their choice,
regardless of species: exotic or domestic?
Yes, although I am not sure what you mean by exotic. Does that include dangerous wild
animals? As long as exotic animals which might be dangerous are responsibly controlled
so as not to endanger people, I believe in the people's right to own these. Circuses and
zoos own them, and they are not the government.
* Do you believe it is okay to discriminate against exotic animal owners through unfair
bans?
I don't believe in unfair bans.
What is your position on the following animal and/or hunting related issues?
a) Hunting, including the use of dogs
I am in favor of this, as I grew up hunting and have hunted many times with my sons. The
state should encourage hunting, not discourage it. Hunters fees should be used to
develop better hunting opportunities, and public lands should be open to hunting.
b) Fishing
Same answer as for hunting.
c) Animal medical research
We need this to help us discover cures which will benefit human beings as well as
animals.
d) Animal ownership and breeding (including pet & livestock breeding, research animals,
circuses and rodeos)
I am completely in favor of private animal ownership and breeding, research, circuses,
and rodeos. These are a part of our American and Western tradition, and an important
part of our freedom and liberty as endowed upon us by our creator and bequeathed to us
by our Founding Fathers.
