JIM FRENCH - Humboldt County Commissioner
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family own a dog, cat, ferret, etc.?

My family owns, dogs ,cats, rabbits, rats, fish, I support the responsible ownership of
animals

* Do you or anyone in your immediate family hunt, with or without a dog?

Yes, we hunt with and without dogs.

* Do you support any animal rescue organizations or shelters?

I have not supported formal animal rescue organizations, I have offered professional
consultation with the construction of wildlife shelters.

* Do you philosophically support any animal rights or animal protection organizations? If
so,please identify the organizations.

At this time I have not observed any animal rights groups I could support. I support the
National Wildlife federation, Nevada Chuckar foundation, Rocky Mnt Elk foundation, Ducks
unlimited, the Mule deer foundation, and trout unlimited

* Do any animal rights or animal protection organizations endorse you as a candidate or
financially support your campaign?

No.

* Should Spaying or Neutering of an animal be controlled by the government through
legislation or should it be left between a veterinarian and their client to decide?

The freedom and the responsible decisions should always rest with the owner.

* Do you believe that animal owners should have their status as owners changed to the
status of guardians? As a guardian you do not own your animals, you are strictly a
caretaker?

No

* Do you support the states' prerogatives to manage their resident wildlife populations
and establish local hunting regulations, without federal interference?

Yes, with the exception of the endangered species act, and migratory treaty act. The
federal government has no constitutional authority over the states to mange wildlife.

* Do you believe in peoples rights to own (responsibly) any animal of their choice,
regardless of species: exotic or domestic?

Once again the right and responsibility rests with the people

* Do you believe it is okay to discriminate against exotic animal owners through unfair
bans?

I am not interested in government intrusion into private decisions. If importation of
exotics and the possible release of those animals threatens native wildlife, regulations
must address the risk and possibly limit ownership were conflicts could exist.

What is your position on the following animal and/or hunting related issues?

a) Hunting, including the use

Managed hunting and the use of dogs is a treasured tradition which must be defended.

b) Fishing

Managed fishing is important to me and others and should be vigorously defended.

c) Animal medical research

In cases were no alternative exists, and the research carries a potential for producing
break through advances for a greater good, the use of animals in research should be
carefully considered.

d) Animal ownership and breeding (including pet & livestock breeding, research animals,
circuses and rodeos)

In all cases the improper treatment of animals is already regulated. People who abuse
animals should be held to task. The legitimate use of animals in the entertainment
industry and in sports is a legal right and should be defended.
