JEFF DURBIN. MSGT. USAF Ret. - Clark County Commissioner District F
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family own a dog, cat, ferret, etc.?
My wife and I own two pure bred doberman pinchers, one Parakeet, and one mini - pin.
We lost one mini-pin of which was our company for nearly 16 years on November 8 of
2009. He is sorely missed by both me and my wife. His name was Brutus and we keep his
ashes and locks of his fur next to our bed in our bedroom. We sometimes touch his fur
just to feel close to him again.
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family hunt, with or without a dog?
When I do hunt, it is without a dog.
* Do you support any animal rescue organizations or shelters?
We used to support Doberman Rescue in Washington DC. We had taken one Doberman, a
female Red that had been left in a home to fend for herself and had survived by eating
dry wall and carpeting. Drinking out of the toilet. We nursed her back to health and IAW
the Doberman Rescue, we had to find her a home elsewhere and we did.
* Do you philosophically support any animal rights or animal protection organizations? If
so,please identify the organizations.
Animals for food purposes, such as cows, pigs, etc., I do not support any other than for
humane methods of slaughter. No clubbing to death for food purposes, but any method to
be humane to the animal, even though God intended it to be a food source, I would not
be content to see a baseball being used to beat it to death.
* Do any animal rights or animal protection organizations endorse you as a candidate or
financially support your campaign?
I have not approached any, but if I did I would think the Doberman Rescue would for my
past involvement
* Should Spaying or Neutering of an animal be controlled by the government through
legislation or should it be left between a veterinarian and their client to decide?
This should be an owners responsibility. I personally neuter and spay my companions
because of the health benefits. My mini-pin who passed on November 8th would never of
had lived this long without having been neutered as a pup. However recently Clark
County instilled a Spay/Neuter Law that infringes on the rights of owners. It sets up too
many restrictions as to the owner's personal responsibility on this. Requiring spay/neuter
for any pet older than 4 months is wrong. For instance had I not had my mini-pin neutered
as a pup, this new law would of had mandated that I put a nearly 16 year old dog in the
hospital for a traumatic procedure. Would this be wrong to do for a dog of this age? I
think so.
* Do you believe that animal owners should have their status as owners changed to the
status of guardians? As a guardian you do not own your animals, you are strictly a
caretaker?
As a pet owner who considers my pets as companions, yes, that does sound nice.
* Do you support the states' prerogatives to manage their resident wildlife populations
and establish local hunting regulations, without federal interference?
Yes, as the states rights and Home Rule take immediate priority over federal laws, etc.,
that are sometimes to far reaching.
* Do you believe in peoples rights to own (responsibly) any animal of their choice,
regardless of species: exotic or domestic?
That is a hard one to answer, but I believe logically the answer is "NO". There are some
animals of which are or could be a danger to society and we must prevent people from
owning these animals. Not all animals can be domesticated. So to have a tiger or a lion in
your home is in my opinion asking for trouble.
* Do you believe it is okay to discriminate against exotic animal owners through unfair
bans?
No. If the person procured the animal legally and if the laws have changed over the years,
they should be grandfathered.
What is your position on the following animal and/or hunting related issues?
a) Hunting, including the use
Hunting is a sport, but for me, I do not need hunting dogs. So why should anyone really
need them to hunt when you have large scopes and other equipment. It could put the
dogs at risk of being mauled or even harmed via gun fire.
b) Fishing
Fishing for the purpose of eating is fine by me. Fishing for sport, i.e., catch and release is
ok.
c) Animal medical research
Regretfully to advance the science discoveries of man, it does indeed become
imperative to utilize animals with the genetic markers key to man kind.
d) Animal ownership and breeding (including pet & livestock breeding, research animals,
circuses and rodeos)
Owning pets is a responsibility of which must be taken seriously. For instance my dogs, I
expect to have with me as my companions till my or their dying days. However between
then and now, I will ensue they are groomed, eat well, are taken care of by vets and when
the time comes when they pass, I hope is is in comfort to them.
