DOUGLAS BELL - Clark County Commissioner District G
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family own a dog, cat, ferret, etc.?
We have three dogs and one cat.
* Do you or anyone in your immediate family hunt, with or without a dog?
We do not hunt. I am not opposed to hunting as properly managed, it can be used as a
tool to control wildlife populations to ensure their survival from disease and hunger. .
* Do you support any animal rescue organizations or shelters?
All of my pets came from rescue organizations and shelters.
* Do you philosophically support any animal rights or animal protection organizations? If
so,please identify the organizations.
We are involved in spaying and neutering pets as we want to see responsible pet
ownership and see fewer animals killed by the shelters. We got our Golden Retriever
from Golden Retriever Rescue of Southern Nevada. We also feed cat colonies after
trapping the strays and personally paying for them to be neutered or spayed. We also
have a license plate that encourages spaying and neutering.
* Do any animal rights or animal protection organizations endorse you as a candidate or
financially support your campaign?
No.
* Should Spaying or Neutering of an animal be controlled by the government through
legislation or should it be left between a veterinarian and their client to decide?
I think that the shelters do not release animals unless they have been spayed or
neutered. I support mandatory spaying and neutering except for recognized breeders, as
I do not want to see animals suffer simply because their owners may be irresponsible.
People who leave abandoned pets in foreclosed houses should be prosecuted for
animal cruelty as this is a terrible thing to do to one's pets. At a minimal, such animals
should be taken to the shelters to have a chance of being adopted.
* Do you believe that animal owners should have their status as owners changed to the
status of guardians? As a guardian you do not own your animals, you are strictly a
caretaker?
When I adopted my golden from the Golden Retriever of Southern Nevada, we had to
share in ownership to ensure that the pet was properly cared for should we need to give
her up. (not likely!). I would not go this far for all animals, but I understand why rescue
organizations use this tool as they want to ensure "forever adoptions" so that people do
not see dogs as easily disposable.
* Do you support the states' prerogatives to manage their resident wildlife populations
and establish local hunting regulations, without federal interference?
As a Republican, I believe in local control, not some Washington bureaucrat who has no
idea of local conditions. I would leave it up to the State which is closer to the People.
* Do you believe in peoples rights to own (responsibly) any animal of their choice,
regardless of species: exotic or domestic?
Other than endangered species, I do have a problem with private ownership provided
that the individual treats the animal in a humane way.
* Do you believe it is okay to discriminate against exotic animal owners through unfair
bans?
It all depends. Wild animals need to be kept away from the public directly as I would hate
to see some young child become a victim of a stray tiger or wolf.
What is your position on the following animal and/or hunting related issues?
a) Hunting, including the use
No problem. This what many breeds were bred to do and it is part of their DNA.
b) Fishing
Think that this is a great sport and a way to enjoy nature.
c) Animal medical research
My father was a research biologist. I believe that we can learn much from animals that is
useful in medical research. Provided that this is done in a humane way with minimal pain
to the animal, I have no problem.
d) Animal ownership and breeding (including pet & livestock breeding, research animals,
circuses and rodeos)
Again, no problem so long as this is done in a humane way, and protects the public safety.
