Geraldine Lewis - State Assembly - District 17

To be completely honest, I do not profess to be the ultimate animal, or animal-care person. In fact, I do not own
a pet.  I am a lover of birds.  I buy feed and provide water for them.

However, as a candidate, I recognize the importance of the need to work with animal shelters and veterinarian
hospitals to help to address the needs of animals and their owners.  Though I do not own a pet, I am a
person who greatly appreciates animals. In fact, I just recently included in a book of poems, my thoughts
regarding animals. If ever you would like to read it, I will be happy to forward that poem on to your organization.

Because I am not an animal owner, as a candidate, I am humbly at your service, and hope to be able to learn
more about the needs of your organization and for what you might expect from your state of Nevada.  Thank you
for allowing me the opportunity to answer your questionnaire.

* Do you or anyone in your immediate family own a dog, cat, ferret, etc.?
A: No.  I once owned a cat.  My sister who lives on my same street, owns two beautiful, and very
loved and well cared for, dogs.

* Is your animal spayed or neutered?
A: None

* Do you support any animal rescue organizations or shelters?
A: To be honest, I do not.  Perhaps if I had more time, and money, I would be interested in helping as much as I
could.

* Do you or anyone in your immediate family hunt, with or without a dog?
A:No

* Do you philosophically support any animal rights or animal protection organizations? If so, please identify the
organizations.
A: None

* Do any animal rights or animal protection
organizations endorse you as a candidate or financially support your campaign?
A: No.  Not as of yet.

Should Spaying or Neutering of an animal be controlled by the government through legislation or should it be left between a
veterinarian and their client to decide?
A: I believe less government, often makes for more freedom. Although I believe in order and civility within a
city state or country, when it comes to the protection and care of animals, I would be more in favor of the
preferences of animal organizations and animal owners than what government wants

* Do you believe in ownership if your animal or guardianship were you do not own your animals – you are strictly a
caretaker?
A: Somehow, I am not quite sure of this question

* Do you support the states' prerogatives to manage their resident wildlife populations and establish local hunting
regulations, without federal interference?
A: Yes

* Do you believe in peoples rights to own (responsibly) any animal of their choice, regardless of species: exotic or
domestic?
A:  Yes, as long as the owners animals do not pose a threat to people

* Do you believe it is okay to discriminate
against exotic animal owners through unfair bans?
A: No

* What is your position on the following animal and/or hunting related issues?

a) Hunting, including the use of hunting dogs
A:     I grew up in Texas where we would often hunt for food.  Today, I believe responsible hunting is still viable.
As for hunting dogs, I think if one is going to hunt, he or she should be able to use whatever means they deem
important; including the use of dogs.

b) Fishing -
A: I would like to see fishermen fish as often as they would like.

c) Animal medical research
A:  I believe animal medical research should be done responsibly

d) Animal ownership and breeding (including pets, livestock, research animals
:A. I believe animal ownership and breeding should largely be left to the decision of the owner.
